No fancy tool is needed for these hand-cut French Fries. You simply cut them in ¼ inch strips and toss them in some seasoning and grill them in an iron skillet.

These are so much better than frying them in oil. Plus we love the smoky, grilled taste that the grill gives. Grilled French Fries is a great side dish recipe to so many of our favorite recipes.

Topping Ideas

Grilled French Fries are great right out of the skillet plain. But sometimes we need to add some topping for a change. Here are some of my favorite toppings:

  • Cheese – You can use different types of cheese but Colby Monterrey Jack is my favorite.
  • Sour Cream – Sour Cream is always a crowd favorite
  • Chives – We love the flavor of chives gives to these potatoes
  • Add Meat – If you have some leftover shredded pork or beef, it would be great loaded on top of the fries for an amazing meal.

How to make Grilled French Fries:

  • Step 1 – Preheat your grill on medium high heat to approximately 450 degrees F.
  • Step 2 – Peel the potatoes and cut into approximately ¼ inch strips.
  • Step 3 – Wash the fries and then soak them for approximately 10-20 minutes. Then drain the potatoes and place them on paper towels and pat them dry.

  • Step 4 – Then add the potatoes and vegetable to a large mixing bowl. Toss until the potatoes are coated in the oil.
  • Step 5 – Then place a cast iron skillet on the grill grate and heat. Add the potatoes and the remaining oil from the bowl to the cast iron.
  • Step 6 – Cook the potatoes in the cast iron skillet until for 20-25 minutes until the fries are well browned and cooked through. Flip the potatoes as little as possible (I flipped ours every 4-6 minutes) and make sure to scrape the bottom of the pan every time you flip to prevent them from burning.
  • Step 7 – Once they are cooked through, remove from the pan to a plate lined with a paper towel. Season with the salt, serve warm and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Potato Option – Any type of potatoes will work but I prefer Russet for this recipe.
  • Pan Movement – Move the pan around every time you flip the potatoes so that you don’t run into any hot spots on the grill.
  • Let Fries Cook – Try to touch the potatoes as little as possible. If you flip them too much, the fries will likely just break with flipping them.

Why Soak Potatoes for French Fries?

The key to get crispy French Fries is to let them soak. When you soak your potatoes before cooking, it removes the starch on the outside of the potatoes. This helps the fries to the extra crispy texture that we love.

How to Cook on the Stove

If you prefer to cook your French Fries on your stove, that works as well. It won’t have that smoky, grill taste but cooking them in the iron skillet still will get the crispy edge.

Place your iron skillet over medium heat after prepping your potatoes and you will have crispy French Fries.

How to Store Leftovers

These grilled French Fries are best served immediately. But you can store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer or oven on a baking sheet to make crispy again.

Recipe Notes

Any type of potatoes will work but I prefer Russet for this recipe.
Move the pan around every time you flip the potatoes so that you don’t run into any hot spots on the grill.
Try to touch the potatoes as little as possible. If you flip them too much, the fries will likely just break with flipping them.
Store the leftover potatoes in an air tight container for up to 5 days. I generally reheat in the microwave but the fries will be softer after they stored.
