What do I need to make this Teriyaki Sauce

There is a high possibility that you already have all of the ingredients needed in your pantry to make the base for this recipe:

  • Soy sauce (make sure to always buy it organic)
  • Water
  • Brown sugar
  • Honey

To add more flavors and the umami taste, you would also need:

  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Sesame seeds

For the sauce to be thick, we’ll also need some cornstarch.

The garlic and ginger pump up the flavor, especially if you use fresh, but if you don’t have the fresh version at home, you can use ground ginger and garlic powder.

As for the tools necessary to make the sauce, you’ll just need your measuring cups and spoons, a saucepan, a wooden spoon and a jar to store it. (Scroll to the bottom of the post for links to products)

How to make Teriyaki Sauce at home

Making this teriyaki sauce at home is very easy and only takes about 10 minutes.

You’ll just need to add all of the ingredients, together with a cornstarch slurry (a mixture of cornstarch and cold liquid), in a saucepan and bring it to a boil.

Finally, if you are going to store the sauce, you need to wait until it has cooled down before transferring it into an airtight glass jar.

How to use this teriyaki sauce

This thick teriyaki sauce is very versatile and can be added to chicken, red meat, plant-based protein or fish, but also for stir-fried veggies, or to create salad dressings like in this salad.

It’s perfect to have on hand if you are having a BBQ, and would like to add an Asian final touch to your food. You just need to brush it onto grilled meat, fish or veggies.

It can also be used to marinate. In this case, it’s better to omit the cornstarch, so that the sauce remains liquid.

Use it on fish for 15 minutes and chicken, pork, beef or plant-based proteins for about 30 minutes.

When the marinade time is passed, cook it on a grill, a skillet or in the oven.

Why do I consider this sauce to be healthy

This homemade teriyaki sauce is healthy because it’s made only with natural ingredients that you control the quality of.

Compared to the store-bought version, you won’t have any artificial ingredients or preservatives added to it; that’s why I’m sure you won’t want to buy it at the store anymore.

However, here is a little heads-up: this sauce calls for a certain quantity of sweetener (honey and cane sugar), so try to not overuse it.

I didn’t know it was so easy to make teriyaki sauce at home. I’m going to give this a try. Do you think it would work with maple syrup instead of honey to make it vegan?
