I made this for Christmas morning. I was a bit worried as some reviewers said the recipe was bland. I used spicy sausage and gluten free bread. All three of my daughters LOVED this - even the picky one. I will be making this many times.

Meh. I served it for a work brunch and while I got compliments, I felt it was too bread heavy and there wasn't enough egg. There are better brunch recipes out there. I won't make this one again.

Loved this recipe! Super simple to make and tastes great! I didn't do the "overnight" soak and loved the texture / results; I also don't use egg substitute so I just added 2 cups of eggs to the recipe and used 3 quality fresh white bread rolls torn into pieces (crusts on). For personal preference, I subbed out the cheddar cheese for pepper jack. Total cook time needed about 5 more minutes, but final result was excellent; nice and fluffy from the bread and eggs. Next time I will be adding some vegetables to give it that much more heft. Leftovers taste excellent too - enjoy!

What a terribly bland recipe. I can honestly say that this was the worst breakfast casserole that I have ever made or eaten. I even added more of each spice. Will not make again.

My husband absolutely loved this recipe. Will use again for overnight guests as it is super easy. I also used wheat bread and did not cut crusts.

This casserole was great! I used real eggs in a pinch, cut up normal sausages, and tore up some bagels with the bread. It made two casseroles- one in a 9 by 13 pan and one in a pie plate. Brought it to a brunch and they loved it! great fallback recipe.

In an effort to eat breakfast regularly, this recipe came up. I didn't use 16 slices of bread; used 12 whole wheat b/c 16 looked too much for the baking dish to handle. Also, I didn't remove the crust, based on another review. When I poured the egg mixture onto the bread pieces (I didn't have a large enough bowl to mix everything together), it wasn't enough to cover it. And I followed the recipe exactly. So I whisked additional 3 eggs to cover the casserole, as I didn't have any egg substitute left over. I sprinkled some shredded cheese on top and added some sliced green onions, besides the paprika. It all ended up very tasty. I'm getting 16 servings instead of 12, to compensate the calories & add'l eggs I added and it's just for me. I would definitely serve this dish to guests.

This is a very good recipe. It was simple to prepare and I love any breakfast casserole that I can prepare the night before. The sausage gave it a little kick. I kept the crust on the bread. It will become one of my regular brunch casseroles.

So tasty! Very light and filling without leaving you feeling bloated and gassy afterwards. I can't believe this is only like, 200 calories. I would serve this to company. This was the first time I used egg substitute and I liked it!

I gave this 5 stars because it fits my needs perfectly. My husband and I always need something for breakfast other than cereal. We like protein in the morning, but I'm sick of cooking an omelet and washing the pan every day. So I made this and then divided it into 12 little breakfast servings. I did try to make it a little more to our taste by using whole wheat bread, using a little more mustard. I found it cooked in 40 minutes vs. 45. I recommend if you need an easy, make ahead breakfast.

This was easy to make...but I thought it tasted a little bland? But I did not have any chili pepper, that could have been it. I used wheat bread and left my crust on, my office staff thought it was great, but suggested I add tomato to it.

this was basically just "ok". i don't ever make egg casseroles, although i make a lot of different recipes and am not afraid to try something new. I was pretty disappointed in this one. Someone even asked me if it was bread pudding, since there was so much bread in this recipe (and i followed the recipe this time! i wish i hadn't!) won't make it again.

This was awesome! So light and filling. Any time I think of sausage, egg, bread and cheese, the words "heavy and gassy" come to mind. This was definitely not the case with this casserole. My parents and my brother LOVED it! Instead of white bread, I used multi-grain bread and cut off the crust-tasted really good. Letting it sit in the fridge over night is key to having it bake correctly the next day. I had never cooked turkey sausage before and it was very flavorful on its own. I will be making this again and again-it was so easy to stick in the oven and bake.

I halved this recipe and used an 8"X11.5" baking dish and reduce the cooking time to 40 minutes. A nice change for breakfast.

I love this recipe, it's so low in calories and super yummy. The trick is the right sausage. I like Jimmy Dean's reduced pork sausage, it's almost as low in calories as turkey sausage.

Excellent! I enjoy the flavor of the turkey sausage better (not as greasy) and I liked that the bread was mixed in instead of sitting on the bottom. It gave it a lighter airy taste. We did put in a bit more cheese, but I'm sure the per serving difference still kept it about at 200 calories. If you're worried about the cayenne, don't - it was not spicy whatsoever - just added good flavor. In fact, next time I think we will add more cayenne. Hope it will last through the week for quick breakfasts that we don't have to feel guilty about!

Very tasty and good! It was very easy to make. I use turkey bacon instead of the sausage and turn out great. I would make this again esp. if you on a low calorie diet. I love it....

I'm always looking for a quick, protein-packed breakfast that my boyfriend can pop in the microwave before he leaves for work, and this recipe does the trick. Makes enough for both he and I to eat breakfast for a whole week. I did make a few changes to the recipe based on what I had on hand: I used skim milk instead of 1%, and I cut up pre-cooked turkey breakfast sausage patties since I couldn't find the right kind in my grocery store. Since I only had 9 oz. of turkey sausage, I added 3 oz. of Spanish chorizo I had on hand--very yummy addition! Instead of regular paprika I used smoked as well. Finally, I only had time to let the egg and bread mixture soak for about 4 hours instead of 8 and it seems to have turned out fine. We've been microwaving a serving for about 1 minute each morning and it's worked out great. Filling and tasty--a good start to the day.

I used soy sausage crumbles for a vegetarian casserole and egg substitute in place of the real eggs. I found the dish to be a bit bready - would definitely decrease it next time. Also threw in some mushrooms. Makes a lot!

I found this recipe to be very bland, and not worth the time it took to make it. I did make two changes though, so it may have been my fault. I used gimme lean "sausage style" instead of sausage and 8 slices of 15 grain bread with crust for bread.

Followed the receipe exactly, except I used a cheese blend since I didn't have sharp cheddar. I think it would have been better with the sharp cheddar. Although the pepper and mustard seemed "un-breakfastlike," they added just the right amount of flavor. I'm thinking of trying it again with some mushrooms added!

Made this for Christmas morning. Used our regular wheat bread but only used 12 slices. Next time I may bump it up to 16 or try using the crust, that's a lot of waste. I bought turkey breakfast links and just removed the casings. I thought the red pepper was a bit much for breakfast so I may cut that back next time. At the end I turned on the broiler for a minute or so which browned up the bread pieces. This was a great flavored casserole and we ate every bit of it for several days after.

Fabulous recipe! Made this for Christmas breakfast and tasted EXACTLY my mom's full fat version made with cream and pork sausage. Everyone loved this casserole and were amazed that this was a lighter version of our traditional favorite. My husband has hinted that he would like this throughout the year. My new favorite breakfast casserole recipe! Perfect as written.

I make this recipe all the time and I love it. I cut it in half since I live alone, and usually use light wheat bread with no problem. Turkey breakfast sausage can be a little tricky to find from time to time (sometimes find it in the freezer section rather than with the rest of the breakfast meats). Great recipe!

I love this recipe. You make it the night before and then you can enjoy your breakfast guests instead of standing over the stove! I would say it serves fewer than 12 though, maybe about 8 people.
