Community celebrations, fishing top weekend outings across Juniata Valley (2024)

Looking for something to do this weekend? There’s plenty going on in the Juniata Valley. It’s the weekend before Memorial Day, so check out these five things before you head out for that long holiday weekend:

Athletic outings

Second Annual Chuck Zimmerman Memorial Golf Tournament: Hit the links at the Lost Creek Golf Course, 28983 Route 35, Oakland Mills, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, to raise money for the Chuck Zimmerman Scholarship Trust. The tournament features a double shotgun start. Email chuckzimmermanscholarshiptrust@gmail.com to register. Entry fee for a team is $360.

Lewistown Read and Run 5K Run/Walk: Primary Health Network Charitable Foundation will hold its inaugural 5K Run/Walk from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday through the hills of Yeagertown. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. Post-race celebration at Primary Health Network’s Lewistown Community Health Center, 106 Derry Heights Blvd., Yeagertown, featuring food, music, awards ceremony, children’s book drive and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds benefit the foundation.

Used Book Sale at Beavertown Library: The 18th Annual Used Book sale at the Beavertown Library, 111 W. Walnut St., Beavertown, is slated for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Purchase a tote bag full of books for $10. Sale features a drawing for a free tote bag of books. Plus, special discount prices from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Reedsville Third Friday: From 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, enjoy live music, food and drink specials, games, activities and more.

Sacred Heart School 75th Anniversary Street Fair: Join Sacred Heart School to celebrate its 75th anniversary from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Dorcas and East Third streets near downtown Lewistown. This fun-filled day will be filled with lots of food and drinks, games, local entertainment and more.

Community Fun Day: A Community Giveback Day sponsored by Harper’s Warriors and Cam’s Hands on Saturday in Walker Park in Mifflin from 1 to 5 p.m. Event is free. Activities include a petting zoo, obstacle course, face painting, fire trucks, police cars and race car drivers on site. Plus, delicious food from the concession stand.

Special Olympics Duck Derby: Team Mifflin-Juniata will host a Duck Derby from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Kishacoquillas Park, 1 Derry Park Drive, Lewistown. Ducks are $5 each with specials on larger quantities. For more information, call (717) 250-1116.

Gone fishin’

Kish Creek Trout Tournament: Takes place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Mifflin County Youth Park, 110 E. Logan St., Reedsville. Largest tagged trout contest with cash prizes. For more information, find them on Facebook.

Hometown Kids Fishing Derby in Honey Grove: Fifth annual fishing derby from 8 a.m. to noon at Woodward’s Pond, 850 Middle Road, Honey Grove. Registration starts at 7 a.m. Derby is for ages 3 to 12. All children must be registered and accompanied by an adult. No spinners allowed. Food stand will be available. For more information, call (717) 734-2315.

Friends of Bob: 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Juniata Valley Winery, 19175 Route 35, Mifflin.

Open Mic Night: 6 p.m. Saturday, Juniata River Commons, 2218 William Penn Highway, Mifflintown.

Sam Thul: 7 p.m. Saturday, Hungry Run Wine Bar and Bistro, 10042 Route 522 South, Lewistown.

Samuel Price: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Shy Bear Brewing, 35 Meadowbrook Lane, Lewistown.

Going for a ride

Remembering Isaiah Ride: Sponsored by Dry Bone Soldiers Motorcycle Ministry, the ride takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Registration at 10 a.m. at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, 211 N. Logan Blvd., Burnham. Kickstands up at 11:30 a.m. All street legal vehicles welcome. A 50/50 drawing will be held prior to the ride. Proceeds benefit Camp Manatawny to sponsor kids to attend summer camp.

Bob Perks Fund Night at the Races: Set for 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Good Shepherd Parish Hall, 867 Gray’s Woods Blvd., Port Matilda. Doors open at 6 p.m. with races at 7 p.m. Audience-participation event displays actual races on screen and called by a live professional announcer. Guests are invited to place wages. Don’t forget to wear those fancy derby hats. Proceeds benefit local cancer patients. Admission is $40. For more information, visit www.bobperksfund.com/events.
